Who We Are
P.M. Bagchi & Company: The Birth of an Institution
P.M. Bagchi & Company, established in 1883, is an 129 years (more than a century) old renowned publishing house. It’s primary publication being the Bengali Almanac (Panjika). P.M. Bagchi Panjika has been, and still is, a popular household name in Bengali communities, not only within the country and neighbouring Bangladesh, but in places as far off as UK and USA. The Panjika also includes the varying time schedules for Hindu festivals celebrated in foreign countries.
This almanac or Panjika is a vast storehouse of information and a ready guide for people of various sections and sub sections of the Hindu religion that contains details of religious procedures as laid out in the “Shastras”, including a list of auspicious moments as well as dates for ceremonies, pujas, marriage and other festivities.
P.M.Bagchi & Company: Other Interesting Publications
Besides the immensely popular Panjika, P.M. Bagchi & Company has made a successful foray into other genres like religion, mythology, indology, history, fiction, science, biography, translated works, children’s books etc.
(1) P.M.Bagchi used to publish ‘Calcutta Street Directory’ with the names of streets, their locations and most importantly the name of the owners or occupiers of the all the houses with their address. Also all the business houses, nature of the business etc. We are very shortly bringing out this directory with much more added informative footnotes like brief bio-data of the persons of those streets along with brief history of all the institutions, important buildings etc. This effort, portraying as it does, the history of Calcutta streets during the first quater of 20th century (1915) would be of invaluable aid to historians and an asset to the collection of all Calcutta lovers.
